a story behind the strange...

I’ve spent a pretty significant portion of my life being told, in one way or another, that I was too much of something. Too weird. Too loud. Too distracted. Too imaginative. Too talkative. Too caught up in my own little world.

Growing up in the South in a deeply religious Pentecostal environment, even my love for the natural world sometimes felt like something I needed to hide. I was fascinated by the woods, the buzzing of the trees, the stones scattered along a trail, the details that other people seemed to walk right past. But when the things you love can be labeled witchcraft or associated with being the devil, it’s hard to know what parts of yourself are safe to share.

So I learned to hide things.

I learned to mask, to make myself more palatable, to tuck away the parts of me that didn’t seem to fit. In school, I was the kid talking when I wasn’t supposed to, doodling instead of paying attention, and getting in trouble for a brain that apparently hadn’t received the memo about sitting still and being quiet. ADHD was never a question anyone thought to ask. I just grew up believing I needed to try harder to be the person everyone expected me to be.

And in all that trying, I stopped being. Looking back, I wonder how much of myself I had learned to leave behind just to get through the day. It wasn’t until much later in life that I received my ADHD diagnosis. & booooooy is there something surreal about finally being handed pieces of information that help explain a lifetime of experiences you’ve spent trying to make sense of on your own.

I’m still learning. Still unmasking. Still figuring out which parts of me are genuinely who I am and which parts I picked up because I thought I had to. I’m learning to understand my brain instead of constantly fighting against it, to give myself grace where I used to give myself grief, and to let myself exist without needing to explain every little thing that makes me different.

And somewhere along the way, I found my way back to art.

so what is Mischief & Moonlight?

It’s me. All of me.

For the past few years, I treated my creativity like something separate from the rest of my life, something I could pick up when it was acceptable and put away when it wasn’t. I’m finally realizing that my art and I were never separate beings. My art is how I see the world. It’s my curiosity, my imagination, my feelings, my obsessions, and all the details my brain refuses to leave alone.

Mischief & Moonlight is where all my creative curiosities get to exist together. Paintings, tattoo art, leatherwork, wire-wrapped treasures, nature-inspired creations, and whatever other delightful oddities my brain decides that we gotta make next. It’s a place where I don’t have to choose one medium, fit into one category, or turn myself into a perfectly polished business persona.

Typos? Yeah, probably.
Unhinged language with absolutely no filter? Ya damn right.
Random glimpses into my day-to-day life? Yup!
A creative brain with approximately seventeen projects going at once? 100%.

You’re getting me: the artist, the daydreamer, the nature-loving oddball, the maker of things, the person who is still learning about herself and giving herself permission to take up space. I’m not interested in creating a brand that looks good on paper but doesn’t feel like me. I want something honest. Something that can grow and change as I do. Something that leaves room for every new curiosity, every weird idea, every unexpected detour, and every version of myself I’m still discovering.

And if I’m being honest, I think that’s what makes this whole thing so special to me. I’m not just making art again. I’m letting myself be seen in a way I haven’t always felt able to be. I’m finally allowing the inside of my brain to exist out here in the world, in all its messy, beautiful, occasionally unhinged glory.

And I’m so damn excited for you to meet her.

a little note

If you’ve ever been told you’re too weird, too much, too sensitive, too dreamy, or that you need to tone yourself down to fit into the world, I hope you find a little piece of yourself here.

If you’ve spent years masking, hiding your interests, or trying to understand why things that seem easy for everyone else feel so complicated for you, I hope you know you’re not alone.

You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t have to fit neatly into a box. And you don’t have to make yourself smaller to deserve a place in this world.

Maybe the things we’ve been taught to hide are worth getting to know again.

So come on in. Wander around. Relax and ground.. Embrace a little weirdness.

There’s room for you here & you are always welcome.

Stay strange. 🌙
